Agent
MotionBased Agent
The MotionBased Agent is software that resides on your computer. It is designed to extract data from your GPS device, store the data locally on your computer, and then send it to MotionBased for online storage and analysis.
  • Agent auto-detects GPS device and USB/COM port settings.
  • Agent extracts data from device and converts data into a MotionBased activity.
  • If Internet connection exists, Agent automatically sends activity to your Inbox at MotionBased website.
  • If Internet connection does not exist, Agent prompts you to synchronize outstanding activity data the next time Agent is launched.
  • Agent auto-detect software updates
  • Communicates with the following Garmin® GPS devices

Inbox
MotionBased Inbox
The Inbox is a required step in the process of sending data from Agent to MotionBased website for storage. The Inbox allows you to personalize and categorize each activity.

But before the activity reaches your Inbox, MotionBased quickly analyzes the GPS data with complex algorithms to hide extraneous or bad GPS track points.

MotionBased will display the following information for each activity:

MotionBased Inbox
  • Location (City, County, State, Country)
  • Distance
  • Duration
  • Day of Week
  • Start Time
  • Finish Time
  • Time Zone
  • Route Breadcrumb (image)

After reviewing this information, you have the option to submit or delete this activity from Inbox. If you choose to save your activity, you must personalize and categorize each activity submitted to MotionBased with the following information:

  • Name
  • Activity Type
  • Event Type
  • Comments
  • Private

Digest
MotionBased Digest

MotionBased Reports
The Digest serves as your storage facility for all activities saved from the Inbox. The Digest allows you to browse through a well-organized library of your activities and select one for detailed analysis.

You may sort through listings by clicking on any of the following column headers:

  • Activity Name
  • Date
  • Activity Type
  • Location

  • Event Type
  • Location

Even more powerful is the Advanced Filter, which allows custom filters and keyword searches for the following criteria: Paid Feature

  • Username (TrailNetwork)
  • Location Name
  • Activity Name
  • Comments

Within the Digest, you can check out your progress over time through the Reports section. View cumulative statistics in rows similar to a spreadsheet program. Here are a few of the types of reports available for grouping cumulative statistics:

  • Daily/Weekly/Monthly/Yearly
  • Activity Type
  • Event Type
  • Time of Day
  • Day of Week
  • Username (Compare all in the TrailNetwork)

For each report you may select the Column Chart corresponding to the measurement in the report to help you visually understand your effort in Time, Distance, Elevation Gain.

After browsing and/or filtering through your activities, you may select an activity for analysis.

Dashboard
MotionBased Dashboard
The Dashboard is your launch pad for activity analysis. It provides a high-level overview of the activity with snapshot information for key variables.

In addition to presenting high-level workout data, the Dashboard is broken down into the following sections for detailed analysis:

  • Time
  • Distance
  • Speed
  • Elevation
  • Heart Rate
  • Laps
  • Weather
  • Equipment

Each Dashboard section provides statistics in table and chart format.

Dashboard: Weather
MotionBased Weather
The Dashboard: Weather section displays "weather-centric" data for the activity.

Based on the location and time of the activity, MotionBased displays the following weather metrics:

  • Predominant Weather Type
  • Predominant Wind Direction
  • Precipitation Type
  • Precipitation Amount
  • Temperature (Avg., High, Low)
  • Relative Humidity (Avg., High, Low)
  • Wind Speed (Avg., High, Low)
  • Wind Gust
  • Cloud Cover
  • Ceiling Height

MotionBased appends weather data to your activity from the nearest weather station from where your activity commenced.

Analyzer: Distance Splits Paid Feature
MotionBased Analyzer
The Analyzer section gives you more detailed analysis of an activity beyond the Dashboard and Map Player sections. Currently, we have one Analyzer running:

Distance Splits - Breaks out activity into 1-mile splits (< 50 miles) and 5-mile splits (> 50 miles) using the following components:

  • Table - lists each individual split as a row in a table.
  • Map - displays the activity route as a line with alternating colors on top of a map background. The alternating colors of the line represent a the alternating split distances.
  • Elevation Profile - displays the elevation profile of the activity route with alternating colors representing the alternating split distances.
  • Configuration - allows you to choose a different map background (Street, Photo, Topo, Elevation) and to toggle the Auto-Refresh feature.

MotionBased highlights segments of the route whenever the you hover over a split segment in the Map, Elevation Profile, or Table components. For instance, if the you hovers over Split #4, MotionBased will highlight that segment in the Map and Elevation Profile segments. In addition, if the you hover over a split segment on the Map or Elevation Profile, MotionBased will highlight the split segment in the Table component. There is direct correlation between all three components.

You may also Zoom In/Out for each split segment. If you Zoom In for a specific distance split, the Map Background will refresh to higher resolution map. You may also choose to Zoom In/Out from the Map, Elevation Profile, and Table components by clicking on a specific row in the Table or the line in the Map and Elevation Profile components.

Map Player™: Route
Map Route
The Map Player Route shows the path taken for a specific activity. The route, highlighted in red, is a series of track points collected by the GPS device during a specific activity. These track points are linked together with a line and displayed on the Map Player. The following layers are associated to the Route:
  • Participant (Dot) - represents the actual location of the participant along the route.
  • Start - represents the starting point of the activity.
  • Finish - represents the finishing point of the activity.
  • Stops - represents points along the route where the participant stopped moving for more than 15 seconds.
  • Distance Marker - represents direction of travel along the route at each 1-mile segment (< 50 miles) or 5-mile segment (> 50 miles) along the route.

Map Player: Backgrounds
Map Backgrounds
The backgrounds on the Map Player provide you with geographic context when viewing your activity route. You may choose from a variety of map backgrounds to layer behind the route:
  • Street - presents worldwide street data. The service includes detailed street data along with administrative boundaries, landmarks, water features, and more.
  • Photo - presents a variety of imagery data taken from a plane or satellite
  • Topo - presents topographic data from the US and New Zealand
  • Contour - presents contour data for the region. This is used when Topo data is not available.
  • Elevation - presents shaded relief imagery derived from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) using a hill-shade technique along with reference data from ESRI.
  • Blank - presents no image background.

The default background is the Street map which you may change at anytime using the drop-down menu in Control Panel.

Map Player: Elevation Profile
Elevation Profile
The Elevation Profile gives you a vertical perspective of the activity in relation to the Map perspective. The Elevation Profile charts the Route (highlighted in red) using track points collected by the GPS Device as elevation against distance. The Elevation Profile is directly linked to the Map as the following layers are associated to the Route:
  • Participant (Dot) - represents the actual location of the participant along the route.
  • Stops - represents points along the route where the participant stopped moving for more than 30 seconds.

You can make the Elevation Profile window larger by clicking the "+" icon in the title bar. You can restore the original size by clicking in the "-"icon in the title bar. You can also drag the Elevation Profile window to any place on the screen by clicking and holding the Title bar while dragging to the desired location.

Map Player: Rollover Window
Map Player Rollover
The Rollover Window is a popup that appears when you rollover an icon or a layer containing contextual information. When the Map Player first loads, you won't see this window. You must mouse over an icon to cause it to appear. The same time a Rollover Window appears in the Map Window the corresponding icon will swell in the Elevation Profile. Which information gets displayed depends on which layers are viewable in the Map Window and which icon you are rolling over. The following is a list of the possible Rollover View Boxes:
  • Split _ A split icon will display the following contextual information: Split Number, Duration, Avg. Speed, Time, and Grade.
  • Stop _ A stop icon will display the following contextual information: Distance, Duration, Time, and Elevation.
  • Participant _ The dot will display the first and last name of the Participant, and the distance of the current position from the start.
  • Start/Finish _ The start and finish icons display the following contextual information: Start Time, Finish Time, Duration, and Distance.

Map Player: Control Panel
Map Player Control Panel
The Control Panel allows you to configure the settings of the Map Player and to simulate an Activity along the Route of a Map and Elevation Profile using standard media controls.

The Player Control functions control the Participant (Dot) layer within the Map Player and Elevation Profile. Based on the Player controls selected by the User, the Participant (Dot) indicator moves along the route simulating the workout:

  • Play - moves Dot continuously forward along the linear track points.
  • Pause - stops the Dot on the track point.
  • Reverse - moves Dot back one track point.
  • Fast Forward - moves Dot forward one track point.
  • Speed - controls the simulation speed of the player. The default speed factor is 6x actual speed. You may change this factor by adjusting Speed control.
  • Background - choose from Street, Photo, Topo, Elevation, and Blank Map Backgrounds.
  • Layers -Toggle what layers associated to the activity will appear on the Route.

Map Player: Heads Up Display
Map Player Heads Up Display
The Heads Up Display in the Map Player provides historical "real-time" statistics for each track point along the activity route.

As you moves the Participant (Dot) using the Map Player controls, MotionBased displays the following data for each track point:

  • Time of Day
  • Time Elapsed
  • Distance
  • Speed
  • Altitude
  • Grade
  • Heart Rate

Dot Racing™
Dot Racing
Dot Racing will change the way you train and compete. What better motivation than to wake up in the morning and try to beat your last run. Sure you can look at the time difference on a watch. But to see how you compare on an interactive map with moving dots? That's fun, and it will get you in better shape.

You can race multiple instances of the same route to see how you're improving or to race other members of MotionBased. You may start "virtually racing" someone you don't even know.

You may choose up to 10 activities to race at one time. In addition, you may change the simulation speed of the race. At this time, you may only use the default city/street map for the Dot Racing.

TrailNetwork™
MotionBased TrailNetwork
The TrailNetwork is the community-oriented section of MotionBased where customers can access activities posted by other members. It's a growing database of activities and routes created by MotionBased customers. The TrailNetwork may be used to discover new activities or to review results of activities for virtual competition.

All activities stored in the Database will be made available for public access through the TrailNetwork unless you manually chooses to hide an activity.

Through a simple browse and search interface, you may search through the TrailNetwork to find routes that match their activity criteria. Activities are displayed in a similar format to the Digest.

After browsing and/or filtering through the TrailNetwork listings, you may select an activity for analysis.

Data Exchange
Managing your activity data is what MotionBased is all about. Training logs are often short lived because of the inability to export data from one device manufacturer's software into another. MotionBased provides data import/export in many different formats allowing you to continue your previous log before MotionBased and export so you may view your activities in other products of your choice. Here are just a few of the data formats MotionBased currently supports:

More importantly, we backup your activities every night so you don't have to. Never let your computer hard drive failure lose your precious history of all your hard work.
